Carl Sweezy was one of the first American Indian painters (along with Ernest Spybuck) to move Indian art beyond purely pictographic forms. He studied under the guidance of famed ethonologist, James Mooney and painted in a style that was reminiscent of classical western painting, but incorporated the simplicity of primitive Indian drawing.  His painting elegantly and accurately captured the turn-of-the-century Arapaho Indians in Oklahoma.  His works are included in numerous important institutional collections, such as the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ), and the Philbrook Museum (Tulsa, OK).
