Description
CAPRIOLE is approximately 33 1/2" high and 8 1/2" wide. It was printed on 100 lb white cover stock paper. It is a limited edition of 950 signed/numbered and 150 artist's proofs. Each print has been signed and numbered by the artist in pencil. Each of the figures shown are approximately five inches high. While the general rule is to never try to increase the size of the images it was ignored in this case as Ruleaux's work is so tight and precise. You can see for yourself in the photo of the print and the detail photos of the individual figures.CAPRIOLE is the fourth print in the series of offset photolithograph prints of artwork by Oglala Lakota (Sioux) artist Donald Ruleaux (1931- ) published by Virden Publishing Company of Burnsville, Minnesota. The five figures of the dancers were chosen from Mr. Ruleaux's watercolors DECORATE THE LODGE or TEN LAKOTA DANCERS so they could be presented in a vertical format. The two original watercolor paintings presented nineteen individual figures. In each of the original paintings the figures are approximately 3 1/2" high. A third watercolor was also done in this style titled ALL MY RESERVATION RELATIVES, which presented ten more figures.
Virden Publishing Company decided in 1994(?) to discontinue their pow-wow trading business, which was how they were marketing the four Ruleaux prints. At that time my wife and I were the owners of One Nation Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. We purchased the previously unsold Ruleaux prints at that time.
Donald Ruleaux (1931-2020) was a registered tribal member of the Oglala Band of the Lakota Nation (Sioux). He was a highly respected artist and art educator. As he was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation his work reflects his love for his people. After graduation from high school he served in the Navy. After his service he entered art school in Kansas City. This was followed by his earning a bachelor's degree in art education at Chadron College (Chadron, NE). A 33 year teaching career in grades K-12 followed during which time he earned a Master's Degree in Art Education from Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ.) A prestigious year long fellowship followed at George Washington University in Washington, DC. His artwork hangs in many important collections in this country as well as abroad.
